Tattoo Aftercare Guide

Protect Your New Tattoo

Follow Your Artist’s Instructions First

Your artist’s written aftercare instructions are specific to the tattoo, placement and covering used during your appointment. Follow those directions even if advice online differs. York Region’s personal-services guidance emphasizes that clients should receive verbal and written aftercare information from the service provider.

General Care During Healing

Keep Hands Clean

Wash your hands before touching the tattoo or applying any product recommended by your artist.

Be Gentle

Clean and dry the area exactly as directed. Avoid scrubbing, scratching, picking or pulling at flaking skin.

Protect the Area

Avoid friction, tight clothing and activities your artist advises against while the surface is healing.

Things to Avoid

When to Ask for Help

If something concerns you during healing, contact the studio promptly so the artist can review the situation. Seek medical advice for symptoms that are severe, worsening or suggest infection, including spreading redness, significant swelling, discharge, worsening pain or fever. This page provides general information and does not replace medical advice.

Keep Your Tattoo Looking Its Best

Once fully healed, protecting tattooed skin from excessive sun exposure can help preserve its appearance. Ask your artist when normal skincare and sun protection can safely resume.
