Support Healthy Healing
Use the Instructions From Your Piercer
Healing needs vary by piercing location, jewelry and individual circumstances. The written directions provided at your appointment should be your primary guide. York Region’s personal-services guidance emphasizes that providers should give clients verbal and written aftercare information.
General Care Principles
Clean Hands First
Wash your hands before touching the piercing or jewelry, including during cleaning.
Avoid Unnecessary Contact
Minimize touching, pressure, snagging and friction around the piercing while it heals.
Follow the Cleaning Plan
Use only the cleaning method and products recommended by your piercer for your specific piercing.
Protecting a New Piercing
- Do not change or remove the initial jewelry until your piercer says it is appropriate.
- Avoid cosmetics, skincare or hair products directly on the healing area unless approved.
- Reduce pressure from clothing, headphones, phones or sleeping positions when relevant to the placement.
- Follow any swimming, exercise or activity restrictions provided at your appointment.
Healing Is Different for Every Placement
Some piercings take considerably longer to settle than others. Do not judge healing only by how the outside looks, and do not change jewelry based solely on a general timeline found online. Contact the studio for advice specific to your piercing.
When to Ask for Help
If you are worried about the piercing, contact the studio promptly. Seek medical advice for symptoms that are severe, worsening or suggest infection, including spreading redness, significant swelling, discharge, worsening pain or fever. This page provides general information and does not replace medical advice.
